The Healthcare Employees’ Pension Plan (HEPP) was established on January 1, 1997 and is a multi-employer defined benefit pension plan with over 65,000 members and over $3.9 billion in assets as at December 31, 2010. The Plan is ranked as one of the top 50 pension plans in Canada in terms of plan assets.

HEPP is governed by an independent, 12-member Board of Trustees, with equal representation from healthcare-related unions in Manitoba and from participating employers. Trustees act on behalf of the Plan beneficiaries to manage the organization and to manage and invest the assets of the Plan. Trustees have a fiduciary duty to beneficiaries of the Plan and are required to act with honesty, integrity, fidelity, selflessness, and the utmost good faith, while concentrating on the interests of beneficiaries.

HEPP is a defined benefit (DB) pension plan, which, unlike a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) or defined contribution (DC) pension plan, uses a formula, rather than investment income derived from pension contributions, to determine benefits payable to eligible members at retirement.

HEPP provides pension benefits to eligible employees of participating healthcare employers, including regional health authorities, hospitals, nursing homes, special-care homes, and other health-related organizations.

At retirement, members are provided with a lifetime pension based on a combination of pensionable earnings history and contributory service.
